Text-based games, also known as interactive fiction or adventure games, are a type of game where the player interacts with the game world through written text. These games typically rely on the player's imagination to create a mental picture of the game's environment, characters, and actions. They can range from simple games with basic commands, to complex narratives with multiple storylines and outcomes. Text-based games were popular in the early days of computer gaming and continue to be enjoyed by many players today. They offer a unique gaming experience that emphasizes storytelling, exploration, and problem-solving.
While video games with advanced graphics are popular and visually stunning, text-based games can offer a different kind of gaming experience that is just as rewarding. The lack of graphics in text-based games may seem like a disadvantage, but it actually allows for a more immersive and imaginative experience. The player has to rely on their own imagination to create a mental image of the game's environment, characters, and events, which can be a more engaging and personalized experience. Additionally, text-based games often have more complex storylines and character development, as the focus is on the writing rather than the visuals.
We will be creating an immersive game where the core principle is to search an environment full of objects for a code. The code can then be used to unlock a secure door, leading players to new and exciting areas.
The main components we will discuss are the door, the game objects, and the game loop. These are just the building blocks which you can use to build an expansive game.
